Merrill Dubrow: My name is Merrill Dubrow, CEO of M/A/R/C Research and a 35-plus-year veteran of the insights community, and the host of our podcast, On the M/A/R/C. Welcome to another Merrill-ISM segment. Today's segment is, The Kentucky Derby Was. Well, a few weeks ago, I had the chance to go to the Kentucky Derby for the first time. A shout out to my BFF Steve Schlesinger, the chairman of Sago, for making every single arrangement. Left no detail to chance, and was a special host for not only me but his son Skylar[ph] and my cuz, Alan. So how would I fill in the rest of that sentence? The Kentucky Derby was? All right, let me talk about a few words. Amazing, a bucket list item, surprising, eye-opening, and beyond special. As you know, I attend a ton of sporting events. I'm not sure I have ever attended one that had more creativity, more energy, and more passion than the Kentucky Derby. I don't pretend to have gone to every college football stadium and taken part in every tradition in those stadiums. But to have 105,000 people on Friday for the Kentucky Oaks get dressed up with funky, crazy hats in crazy colors, is pretty darn special. To follow that up, the next day, less than 24 hours later, with 153,000 for the Kentucky Derby, is even more amazing. It's the largest sporting event I've ever gone to in my life. Now, for some of you, for most of you perhaps, it was a NASCAR race. I know TMS, which is Texas Motor Speedway, here in Texas, maybe 15 miles away, they get 250,000. But I've not been, and this was the largest sporting event I'd ever been to. Yes, everybody was drinking and laughing, talking and gambling. And with that many people you would think that with that combo of things happening, people would be unruly. No, they would be nasty. Not at all. They'd be drunk. Well, maybe, but definitely respectful. I didn't see one person unruly, not one, seriously. For me, this was a bucket list item. And again, a big shout-out to Steve for checking this one off my list. None of us know what's in store of us tomorrow. But I have a little challenge. Take a look at your bucket list. Perhaps 2023 is the year of crossing off some of those items. No need to wait until 2024 or 2025, or beyond. Why not do it this year? My name is Merrill Dubrow, thanks for listening to today's podcast, The Kentucky Derby Was. Stay well, stay safe, and please, please stay in touch.
