Merrill Dubrow: My name is Merrill Dubrow, CEO of M/A/R/C Research and a 35-plus-year veteran of the Insights Community and the host of our podcast On the M/A/R/C. Welcome to another On the M/A/R/C Merrill-ISM. Joel, you can't drive anymore. All right. Last month I'm in Florida visiting my mom and in the garage was my dad's old car. I paused for a minute and reminded me about a story that frankly I wanted to share. Unfortunately, most of you know, my dad passed away about five and a half years ago. And the last few years of his life were difficult and very challenging. My dad was smart- very smart, actually, until the end. He was not an ostentatious guy. He was very hardworking. He wanted to provide, my dad knew something at the end was wrong with his body and memory was starting to fail him. But he wanted to buy a new car and my entire family thought that was a bad idea because he shouldn't be driving anymore. And frankly, truth be told about my dad, he wasn't a good driver. And no surprise he passed that down to me. Thanks, dad. As we were trying to figure out how to tell my dad he couldn't drive or just take away his keys, something happened. The doctor- my dad's doctor, said to my dad, Joel, you really can't drive anymore. I know you don't want to hurt anyone, Joel, or yourself and it's just too dangerous. My dad knew that was coming and wanted to buy one last car in his life, which he drove really only about 50 miles. The reason I wanted to share this story was that many of us are or will be facing the same issue, the same concern. To some extent, good cop, bad cop with your parents doctor being the bad cop and delivering news probably is something to consider. We did and it worked for us. And I got to tell you, this is real for so, so many of us, and I truly hope this story helps just one or two listeners. Thanks for listening to today's On the M/A/R/C Merril-ISM, Joel, you can't drive anymore. My name is Merrill Dubrow. I look forward to hearing from you. Stay well, stay safe, and please, please stay in touch.
