Welcome to another Merrill-ISMs segment. Today's segment is, Why isn't Deferred Compensation a Must. Let me know if this sounds familiar, a superstar at a young age getting paid lots of dollars. A professional athlete supporting a ton of family members spending a ridiculous amount of money week after week, month after month, no idea how to manage money or even what a budget is. They believe they're a star, and it'll never end. They made it. "Look at me. I'll do what I want, I'll do when I want, and I'll do it how I want." They have a big entourage, and then a bad night. Someone does something foolish. Maybe a fight breaks out, or they get hurt on the court, or the field, and their career comes to an end. Ultimately, your financial manager calls you and says, "Hey, you're broke." The athlete doesn't understand. They don't get it. They don't believe them. They never thought that could happen. And then, they declare bankruptcy. The list of players who made millions of dollars that this has happened to be huge. Yes, huge. Vince Young, Antoine Walker, who made over $100 million, mostly with the Boston Celtics. Seriously, how'd he burns that kind of money? Derrick Coleman was a star. Terrell Owens, one of the greatest receivers in football history. Kenny Anderson, one of the best basketball players out of New York, and Allen Iverson, ay-ay, all went broke. Curt Schilling and Dan Marino, they took a different path with really bad investments, but the same thing happened to them. Financial issues and serious ones. Why don't all of the commissioners of major sports get together and say, I don't know, "20% of the athlete’s salary will be deferred compensation." Would this help some, if not many? I say yes. And no idea why this hasn't happened, in fact, yesterday. I personally think this issue has some easy solutions. What do you think? Do you agree with me? Do you have other ideas? My name is Merrill Dubrow. Thanks for listening to today's podcast, Why isn't Deferred Compensation a Must? Stay well, stay safe. And please, please, stay in touch.
