Merrill Dubrow: My name is Merrill Dubrow, CEO of M/A/R/C Research, a 35-plus year veteran of the insights command, the host of our podcast On the M/A/R/C. Welcome to another On the M/A/R/C Merrill-ISM segment. Today's segment is the next Nolan Ryan– A few weeks ago, I was cleaning out some boxes and tossing out tons of stuff, and I come across a Baseball Weekly magazine from May of 1990, so about 24 years ago, and the headline was regarded as one of the top baseball prospects in the US. Josh Beckett was drafted by the Marlins with the second overall pick in the '99 MLB draft behind Josh Hamilton. And it really doesn't matter to me that Josh Beckett did toss a no-hitter in the majors. He won a few World Series. He had almost 140 wins, almost 2000 strikeouts, and what I will say twice during this podcast- yes, twice. There will be no next Nolan Ryan ever. Nolan Ryan once had 19 strikeouts in a game where he threw 235 pitches in 13 innings. Yes, 235. Check it. Fact check me. It was June 14 of 1974. Most starters today barely get to 110, and Nolan threw 235 that day. Nolan Ryan holds 51 total Major League Baseball records including over 5700 strikeouts, the lowest career batting average allowed of 204, 7 no-hitters, the most ever. And by the way, interesting, because I did check this, I wanted to know how many years between his first and last no-hitters. It was 18 years. He had 12 more career one-hitters, tied with Bob Feller. He had 18 career two-hitters. He had 15 200 strikeout seasons, six 300 strikeout seasons, and his hits per nine innings pitched was 6.55. The next few is Sandy Koufax. The great Sandy Koufax is 6.7 and he had 26 seasons. I can't even believe I'm saying this number. I can't even believe that this is true. He pitched until he was 47. He had 26 seasons with at least one win, and 324 in total. Again, there will be no next Nolan Ryan ever, ever. My name is Merrill Dubrow. Thanks for listening to today's On the M/A/R/C podcast and Merrill-ISM. Today's segment is the next Nolan Ryan. What are your thoughts? Do you agree with me?
